By the early 2000s, the BMW M3 had already established itself as one of the great driver’s cars of its era—balanced, capable, and deeply connected to BMW’s performance heritage. But for BMW Motorsport, being great on the road was never the end of the story. To compete at the highest level, the M3 would need to become something more focused, more aggressive, and more relentless in its purpose.

That pursuit gave rise to the E46 M3 GTR.
